ONEin3 Spotlight: Anthony Britt

26-year old ONEin3 Council Member Anthony Britt moved back to Boston after two years of teaching in Mississippi with Teach for America for Boston for a few reasons.
“I wanted to be close to family, to reconnect with a critical mass of progressive, educated young people across varied industries, and to explore what goes into cultivating a successful American city.”

Now an Impact Coach at City Year, Anthony provides instructional coaching and support for corps members across a portfolio of partner schools.  This summer, he is focusing on building new systems to strengthen City Year’s literacy work and increase the program’s capacity for effective service in Boston Public Schools.

“My personal and professional mission is to break down the barriers blocking low-income children from unlocking unlimited potential and attaining high-outcome lives,” says Anthony.  “I hope to contribute to building a more equitable world where all children have access to opportunities that allow them to prosper for the good of themselves and their communities.”

In addition to being a rock-star community member, Anthony enjoys to play basketball at the YMCA in his South End neighborhood and refuel with Dim Sum in Chinatown, or at the Chicken and Rice Guys SOWA food truck.

5 ways to make an impact on Boston’s youth through the tech and arts communities

So… ONEin3 Superstar Council Member Lee Glandorf and the rest of her team recently published an article in BetaBoston, the Boston Globe’s online new source covering tech, startups, entrepreneurship, etc.  The article highlights five specific ways you can give back to the big Boston community, while using your STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) skills.  Check out the article and let us know where you plan to begin!

Meet our Summer Interns!

Here at ONEin3, we are extremely lucky to have FAB-U-LOUS interns each semester and summer 2014 is no exception.   They will be researching, blogging, tweeting, writing and (hopefully) have a ton of fun!  Read up on our new friends below and look out for their awesome work coming to you soon!

Alex Connors

Hi! I’m Alex Connors, a student at Tufts University and one of the new ONEin3 Summer Interns.

Being born and raised in Massachusetts, I’ve always felt a deep connection to the city of Boston. Ever since I started playing tee-ball and decided that I wanted to play for the Red Sox, I have always imagined myself spending my life here. (This future became even more solidified in my mind when I turned eleven and no letter from Hogwarts arrived in the mail).

Boston always seemed like the Emerald City, magical and larger than life. But now, as a student at Tufts University, Boston has become accessible and open to exploration, and my life here has become a reality. I chose to major in Political Science and Economics because I felt that this course of study would best qualify me to be able to have a positive impact on my city. And here at ONEin3 I hope to begin to do just that, as well as develop a solid understanding of how I can be most effective at making a difference in Boston. Because, no matter where I end up, I will always define success in my life by my proximity to Fenway Park.

I’ll be blogging here throughout the summer, so let me know if you have any great ideas for content to share, and if you have anything to contribute, we might feature you on our Twitter, Facebook, or Blog!

Erick Pinos

Hey, I’m Erick.  I’m a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and I’m one of ONEin3’s newest summer interns.

Growing up in Hawthorne, New Jersey, has given it a special place in my heart.  When I decided I wanted to start giving back to the community, I created a town green map to raise environmental awareness and launched a summer tech workshop for kids.

Getting the opportunity to go to school at MIT and live in Boston was like winning a golden ticket to Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.  “America’s Walking City” continues to overwhelm me with all of its rich history culture.  As a Computer Science and Electrical Engineer major, my love for technology has driven me to search for new ways to bring people together and form lasting communities.  Seeking to do that in Boston, I found ONEin3, whose mission to bring people closer together is one that I’m passionate about.  I hope to help make positive change in Boston and make it better for everyone.

ONEin3 Spotlight: Rightside Shirts Promotes Youth Creativity

In 2012, Dylan Enright and Jeff White were seniors at Boston College when an art class and a TED talk inspired them to reject their job offers from high-profile financial services firms to create a nonprofit instead.

With that, Rightside Shirts was born.  Rightside shirts is a nonprofit t-shirt company that raises money for youth art education by showcasing children’s creative talents.  All of the shirts are designed by students in public elementary and middle schools and 100% of profits are donated back to the designers’ school to fund art programs.

Currently, Rightside Shirts works with 18 Boston Public Schools and has recently expanded to the San Francisco Public School System as well.  They have printed 79 young artists and have raised over $4,000 for arts education programs.

For nonprofit entrepreneurs, Jeff advises: “Follow your dreams - no matter what - even if it’s not easy, because most likely it won’t be.  Our generation is lucky to be living in the age that we’re living in because anyone can build a website and spread an idea through social media to build a foundation, especially in Boston.”
