ONEin3 Mayor’s Advisory Council Update: Young Families Edition

Hello ONEin3 Readers,

The 2010-2011 ONEin3 Mayor’s Advisory Council has been working over the last 4 months to put together meaningful problem-solving efforts that will improve life for ONEin3ers like you. Featured in today’s update: the ever-inspiring Young Families & Education subcommittee!

The highly motivated and thoughtful Young Families & Education team has identified parental involvement as their key issue for the year, specifically the participation of fathers in the school system. After meeting with Cyntoria Grant from the BPS Department of Family and Student Engagement, who gave them a breakdown of the initiatives already in place, they are moving full steam ahead to pinpoint promising efforts currently at work here in Boston and elsewhere.

Young Families & Education plans to study outreach to New Bostonians and parents with limited English proficiency to ensure that the supports in place through BPS and the City reach all families in the system. They will look into the BPS Parent Councils, Parent University, and other networks to find effective points of engagement for fathers, and also research effective strategies for drawing out that engagement in the first place.

If you know of an impactful fathers’ program in your neighborhood or child’s school, please post to the comments!

The Mayor’s Holiday Special – Downtown’s the Place to Be!

Ok ONEin3ers, it took us a while to put this out. It’s been going on for a little while but we suffer metaphysical pain just thinking about Christmas/The Holidays before Thanksgiving.

Now that we’ve got the turkey, family, brilliant fall weather and relaxation out of the way, we’re READY for the Mayor’s Holiday Special in all its glory!

We plan to buy 1/2 price tickets to as many of the 50+ shows participating this year as we possibly can and, while we’re at it, we’re going to have dinner at a $10 discount using a, you guessed it, $10 voucher from the Mayor’s Holiday Special.

We might even be spontaneous a few times and get ourselves some discounted day-of tickets. Who knows! As KG once said, “ANYTHING IS POSSIBBBLLLLLEEE!”

There are also some free/very-low-cost events happening around town that we may attend to feel the spirit of the season.

We hope to see you there!

PS. The Holiday Special lasts all the way through January 1st, so you have some time. Also, it’s a big collaboration involving the Mayor’s Office of Arts, Tourism and Special Events, Arts Boston and the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau.

PPS. You also need to know about the Downtown Crossing Holiday Market, where you can get some gifts, trees, anything you want right in Downtown Crossing!

Boston Lyric Opera’s Open House is FREE on Nov. 6

It’s Friday and I’ve gone stupid. Paysha Rhone from Boston Lyric Opera sent me an email about their open house with the word “FREE” in the subject line and 2 of the first 3 sentences, so naturally I sent her an email back saying “Is this event free?”

Anyway, the Boston Lyric Opera is a great Boston institution and they’re hosting a FREE (free) open house on November 6th at the Shubert Theatre.

From 11:00am to 5:00pm, attendees get an all access tour of the Shubert, including dressing room tours, performances by performers from the BLO production of Tosca, make up and wig stations for the kiddies, and the second annual Aria Contest for Teens.

This is the perfect event for all you opera fans out there (especially if you have kids), so get on it.

Date: Saturday, November 6th

Time: 11:00am to 5:00pm

Location: Shubert Theatre, 265 Tremont Street, Boston

More Info: Open House, Tosca, Boston Lyric Opera

Afterwards, The Barking Crab will be hosting the Fort Point Pumpkin Pageant Celebration where the winner will be announced and live band, Java Jive will be playing from 6-9PM. Hosted by Friends of Fort Point Channel, special thanks to the Boston Children’s Museum, Old Town Trolley’s, and the Barking Crab.
